“It is important to recognize that the prophets were not the regular teachers of God’s word–that was the priests’ calling. Rather, God raised up prophets for particular times in the OT story.”

Taking this into account, in class we mentioned that the prophets helped correct the people and the king. What were the priests doing during this time? It seems to imply that they were silent.

What is the point of prophecy? I know that back in the OT the prophets helped the people understand the mind of God.. But I also know that Revelation is a slightly cryptic book, and theologians try hard to understnad it… but what is wrong with not knowing everything? Maybe God doesn’t intend for us to figure absolutely everything out…

Could you explain how exactly the prophets were chosen? Did God just choose the most righteous men to use as prophets, or was it determined kinda like how God chose the Israelites in that there was no way of explaining how he chose them?

My question is pretty much the same as Ben’s. Did God just chose them arbitrarily or for some reason that we don’t know?
I had a conversation with a mormon a while back and she said her brother was gonna be a Prophet when he grew up. When I asked her why she thought so, she said “cause everybody likes him.” I’m pretty sure that’s not how it worked in the O.T., but I don’t know how it does.

I don’t understand why God does not use prophecy today like he did back in the OT. Why has God chosen to be silent in this way in our age?

In the purpose, occasion, and background (pg 1235)
what does it mean when the people are called ransomed?

What does it mean when it says “the prophets pressed God’s claims on the chosen people, especially the standards of the mosaic covenant.”
