Civil Twilight – Soldier

Yes, it’s 3 for 3 for this band.

I must say that I’m quite impressed.

I take aim from the kitchen window
I take aim from up and down below
I take aim from the tree in your backyard
I fall asleep but I’m always on guard
I take the shots but I have no authority
I take the shots but I’m not guilty
I’m just a soldier in another war
It doesn’t matter who I’m fighting for

(Chorus)
I don’t stop till my country says so
I don’t stop till the end of the show
I don’t know why I hold this gun
I’m just a soldier
Fighting for someone

I have a wife and a big ol’ family
I have a wife and she’s waiting at home for me
I cleanse my sins as I walk through that door
It doesn’t matter what I’ve done before

(Chorus)
I don’t stop till my mission is done
I don’t stop till they tell me I’ve won
I don’t know what I’m fighting for
I’m just a soldier aiming for one more

(Bridge)
My family they cover me
My family they cover me
All I see is what I believe
I am not guilty, no
I am not guilty

(Chorus)
I don’t stop not even in my dreams
I don’t stop seeing things that I’ve seen
I don’t know why I raise this hell
I’m just a soldier fighting for someone else

Civil Twilight – Human

Another great song with another great lyric.

I’m really starting to like this band.

There’s one way out and one way in
Back to the beginning
There’s one way back to home again
To where I feel forgiven

What is this I feel, why is it so real
What am I to say

It’s only love, it’s only pain
It’s only fear, that run through my veins
It’s all the things you can’t explain
That make us human

I am just an image of something so much greater
I am just a picture frame, I am not the painter
Where do I begin, can I shed this skin
What is this I feel within

It’s only love, it’s only pain
It’s only fear that runs through my veins
It’s all the things you can’t explain
That make us human

That make us human
That make us human

It’s only love, it’s only pain
It’s only fear that runs through my veins
It’s all the things you can’t explain
That make us human

That make us human
That make us human
Oh that make us human

Civil Twilight – Letters From the Sky

a great tune with an even better lyric.

Free on itunes this week. (Link embedded in video)

One of these days the sky’s gonna break and everything will escape and I’ll know
One of these days the mountains are gonna fall into the sea and they’ll know
That you and I were made for this
I was made to taste your kiss
We were made to never fall away
Never fall away

One of these days letters are gonna fall from the sky telling us all to go free
But until that day I’ll find a way to let everybody know that you’re coming back, you’re coming back for me
‘Cause even though you left me here I have nothing left to fear
These are only walls that hold me here
Hold me here, hold me here
The only walls to hold me here

One day soon I’ll hold you like the sun holds the moon
And we will hear those planes overhead and we won’t have to be scared
We won’t have to be scared, we won’t have to be scared

You’re coming back for me
You’re coming back for me

You’re coming back to me

Old Testament Wilderness

It is no strain of metaphor to say that the love of God and the wrath of God are the same thing, described from opposite points of view. How we shall experience it depends upon the way we shall come up against it: God does not change; it is man’s moral state that changes. The wrath of God is a figure of speech to denote God’s unchanging opposition to sin; it is His righteous love operating to destroy evil. It is not evil that will have the last word, but good; not sorrow, but joy; not hate, but love.

Quote of the Day

William Cowper

O for a closer walk with God,
A calm and heavenly frame,
A light to shine upon the road
That leads me to the Lamb!

Return, O holy Dove, return,
Sweet messenger of rest:
I hate the sins that made Thee mourn,
And drove Thee from my breast.

The dearest idol I have known,
Whate’er that idol be,
Help me to tear it from Thy throne,
And worship only Thee.

So shall my walk be close with God,
Calm and serene my frame;
So purer light shall mark the road
That leads me to the Lamb.

The most important thing I did today…

…was officiate Troy and Lisa Votaw’s wedding.

They are one reason why I’m choosing to be hopeful about the future. Couples like this renew my faith and encourage me to keep going in tough times.

Thanks, Troy and Lisa, for letting us be a part of this special day.

We’d love to be a part of your marriage, too.

P.S. – One of the reasons I’m hopeful is that all the groomsmen, the bride and the groom (and me, their humble officiant) wore Chuck Taylors. How great is that?

Quote of the Day

A Christian marriage is [not] one with no problems or even a marriage with fewer problems. (It may well mean more problems.) But it does mean a life in which two people are able to accept each other and love each other in the midst of problems and fears. It means a marriage in which selfish people can accept selfish people without constantly trying to change them—and even accept themselves, because they realize personally that they have been accepted by Christ.

U2 – With or Without You

This is officially the last video I have available to post from the concert I attended on Sep. 12 at Soldier Field in Chicago.

You might say, oh, I don’t know, that I’m a fan.

Hope the 2 of you who read this blog have enjoyed my chronicle of what was undoubtedly a top 10 day in my 36 years.
