  1. In the O.T. there were many Laws about intermingling with other cultures, or more specifically, not intermingling with other cultures. It was very clear that God wanted the Isrealites to be holy and set apart.

In the Gospels, Jesus commands us to go out into the world and make more disciples, not come out of the world and hide away in only christian circles. This sounds like then, that the segregation laws (for lack of a better term) were not refreshed in the N.T. by Jesus.

Yet, today, there are always people encouraging us to choose good friends and avoid hanging out with “the wrong crowd;” and there is wisdom in this way of thinking.

What’s a good way to balance going into the world and affecting the world for Christ, without becoming affected by the world ourselves. How should we go about being in the world, but not of the world?

  2. In class you mentioned that God chose Mary, Israelites, etc. because they were, in a sense, nobodys..

But God is in control of everything and He is all-knowing–why then was it in His plan for disobedience, so many lost years, and the strife and confusion that came with that… Resulting in what was seemingly no lesson learned.

I feel like, perhaps, they were not the best representatives for “God’s people”… And look at that nation now…. Israel, really?

  3. Pg. 172 states “The Law shows us how impossible it is to please God on our own.”
    >> Question: We are trying to please God on our own but we need his help? God has to help us to please him? Could you further explain this for me?

  4. I dont understand the reason for the behavior of the Israelites once they were lead out of Egypt. Youd think that after all the miracles they saw God perform through Moses and the way he provided for them once they left Egypt theyd figure out that God could give them anything they needed. Yet whenever anything went wrong, theyd blame it on God or decide to make idols for themselves to worship instead of God.I just dont understand how these people could have been so blind that they couldnt see all that God had done for them and all that he could do if they just asked. Is there any logical way to explain the Israelites behavior toward God?

  5. What Old Testiment Laws do modern day Jews ascribe to? How do they justify no longer sacrificing animals since this was necessary for the cleansing of sin? Do they simply excuse it because the temple is gone, and if so what do they believe is necessary to atone for their sins?

  6. Deut 23:15-16 says, “If a slave has taken refuge with you, do not hand him over to his master. Let him live among you wherever he likes and in whatever town he chooses. Do not oppress him.”

On page 177 it seems like they randomly put this in. Frankly, it confuses me. I understand the grace and mercy exercised in these verses, but I don’t quite understand why the slave was allowed to “ditch” his human owner although I understand that God is the slave’s ultimate owner. It’s just really spinning my head.

  7. anna…you beat me to it…my question is the same as hers…i dont understand this…does jesus change this in the new testament when he tells slaves to stay with their masters and to obey them…does this mean that slaves of all terrible sorts should be able to flee and go to a different town and it be ok, or does this mean they shouldnt seek freedom by fleeing and stay under the slavery and bondage they are in????
