U2 Video of the Day – 28 February

“sweet the sin, bitter the taste in my mouth”

From the 1989 film “Rattle and Hum”

From wikipedia:

“Running to Stand Still” is the fifth track from U2′s 1987 album, The Joshua Tree. It is a soft, slow, piano-based song about a heroin-addicted woman from the Ballymun Seven Towers area of Dublin, shown in the lyric “I see seven towers/But I only see one way out.” The woman’s addiction is reflected in lines such as “She runs through the streets/With her eyes painted red” and “She will suffer the needle chill.” Bono’s lyrics evoke helplessness and frustration: “You’ve got to cry without weeping, talk without speaking, scream without raising your voice.”

I’ve probably listened to this song 5000 times over the course of my life.

RUNNING TO STAND STILL
And so she woke up
Woke up from where she was lyin’ still.
Said I gotta do something
About where we’re goin’.

Step on a fast train
Step out of the driving rain, maybe
Run from the darkness in the night.
Singing ah, ah la la la de day
Ah la la la de day.

Sweet the sin, bitter the taste in my mouth.
I see seven towers, but I only see one way out.
You gotta cry without weeping, talk without speaking
Scream without raising your voice.
You know I took the poison, from the poison stream
Then I floated out of here, singing
Ah la la la de day
Ah la la la de day.

She walks through the streets
With her eyes painted red
Under black belly of cloud in the rain.
In through a doorway
She brings me white golden pearls
Stolen from the sea.

She is ragin’
She is ragin’
And the storm blows up in her eyes.
She will suffer the needle chill
She’s running to stand still.

“lay down your treasure…”

LOVE AND PEACE OR ELSE
Lay down
Lay down
Lay your sweet lovely on the ground
Lay your love on the track
We’re gonna break the monster’s back
Yes we are
Lay down your treasure
Lay it down now brother
You don’t have time
For a jealous lover

As you enter this life
I pray you depart
With a wrinkled face
And a brand new heart

I don’t know if I can take it
I’m not easy on my knees
Here’s my heart you can break it

I need some release, release, release

We need
Love and peace
Love and peace

Lay down
Lay down your guns
All your daughters of Zion
All your Abraham sons

I don’t know if I can make it
I’m not easy on my knees
Here’s my heart and you can break it
I need some release, release, release

We need
Love and peace
Love and peace

Baby don’t fight
We can talk this thing through
It’s not a big problem
It’s just me and you
You can call or I’ll phone
The TV is still on
But the sound is turned down
And the troops on the ground
Are about to dig in

And I wonder where is the love?
Where is the love?
Where is the love?
Where is the love?
Love and peace

U2 Video of the Day – 26 February

I would readily admit that Johnny Cash and U2 are in the conversation for my favourite artists of all time. The fact that they recorded this song together, and that it’s achingly beautiful, is icing on the cake.

More duality present here as Bono weaves a tale of loss, redemption, and brokenness in this post-apocalyptic ballad about a wayward preacher.

THE WANDERER
I went out walking through streets paved with gold
Lifted some stones, saw the skin and bones
Of a city without a soul
I went out walking under an atomic sky
Where the ground won’t turn and the rain it burns
Like the tears when I said goodbye.

Yeah, I went with nothing, nothing but the thought of you.
I went wandering.

I went drifting through the capitals of tin
Where men can’t walk or freely talk
And sons turn their fathers in.
I stopped outside a church house
Where the citizens like to sit.
They say they want the kingdom
But they don’t want God in it.

I went out riding down that old eight-lane
I passed a thousand signs looking for my own name.
I went with nothing but the thought you’d be there too,
Looking for you.

I went out there in search of experience
To taste and to touch and to feel as much
As a man can before he repents.

I went out searching, looking for one good man
A spirit who would not bend or break
Who would sit at his father’s right hand.
I went out walking with a bible and a gun
The word of God lay heavy on my heart
I was sure I was the one.

Now Jesus, don’t you wait up, Jesus I’ll be home soon.
Yeah, I went out for the papers, told her I’d be back by noon.
Yeah, I left with nothing but the thought you’d be there too
Looking for you.

Yeah, I went with nothing, nothing but the thought of you.
I went wandering.

Some much overdue updates.

I’ve always loved the poetry of this song.

THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE

Ice, your only rivers run cold.
These city lights, they shine as silver and gold.
Dug from the night, your eyes as black as coal.

Walk on by, walk on through.
Walk till you run and don’t look back
For here I am.

Carnival, the wheels fly and the colours spin through alcohol.
Red wine that punctures the skin.
Face to face in a dry and waterless place.

Walk on by, walk on through.
So sad to besiege your love oh hang on.

Stay this time, stay tonight in a lie.
I’m only asking, but I, I think you know.
Come on take me away, come on take me away
Come on take me home, home again.

And if the mountains should crumble
Or disappear into the sea
Not a tear, no not I.

Stay this time, stay tonight in a lie.
Ever after is a long time.
And if you save your love, save it all, save it all
Don’t push me too far, don’t push me too far.
Tonight, tonight.

U2 Video of the Day – 24 February

The sweet sweet memories this song recalls. Driving back and forth from my girlfriend’s house in my 1983 AMC Concord. This song rocking the tape deck.

“If I want to live I’ve got to die to myself someday.” Straight out of the New Testament & into my heart.

A hidden gem.

Enjoy.

Oh, the city’s alight with lovers and lies
And bright blue eyes.
Oh, the city is bright, it’s brighter than day tonight.
(Surrender, surrender)
(Surrender, surrender)

Sadie said she couldn’t work out what it was all about
And so she let go.
Now Sadie’s on the street and the people she meets you know.

She tried to be a good girl and a good wife
Raise a good family
Lead a good life
It’s not good enough
She got herself up on the 48th floor
Gotta find out
Find out what she’s living for.

Oh, the city’s afire
A passionate flame that knows me by name.
Oh, the city’s desire to take me for more and more.
It’s in the street gettin’ under my feet
It’s in the air, it’s everywhere I look for you.
It’s in the things that I do and say
And if I wanna live I gotta die to myself someday.

The purveyor of all truth wikipedia article for this song says that they’ve performed it almost 750 times.

We’ve just passed MLK Jr’s 80th birthday.

“May your dream be realized”

One man come in the name of love
One man come and go
One come he to justify
One man to overthrow

In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love

One man caught on a barbed wire fence
One man he resist
One man washed on an empty beach.
One man betrayed with a kiss

In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love

(nobody like you…)

Early morning, April 4
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride

In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love…

U2 Video of the Day – 22 February

the only pop song I know of to use the word “intransigence”

- refusal to compromise or abandon a radical position

Summer stretching on the grass
Summer dresses pass
In the shade of a willow tree
Creeps a-crawling over me
Over me and over you
Stuck together with God’s glue
Itís gonna get stickier too.
Itís been a long hot summer
Let’s get under cover
Don’t try too hard to think
Don’t think at all.

I’m not the only one
Staring at the sun
Afraid of what you’d find
If you take a look inside.
Not just deaf and dumb
Iím staring at the sun
Not the only one
Who’s happy to go blind.

There’s an insect in your ear
If you scratch it won’t disappear.
It’s gonna itch and burn and sting
Do you wanna see what the scratching brings!
Waves that leave me out of reach
Breaking on your back like a beach.
Will we ever live in peace?
‘Cause those that can’t do often have to
And those that can’t do often have to preach

To the ones staring at the sun
Afraid of what you’ll find if you took a look inside.
Not just deaf and dumb, staring at the sun
I’m not the only one who’d rather go blind.

Intransigence in all around
Military’s still in town
Armour plated suits and ties
Daddy just won’t say goodbye
Referee won’t blow the whistle.
God is good but will he listen?
I’m nearly great but there’s something missing.
I left it in the duty free,
Oh, though you never really belonged to me.

You’re not the only one staring at the sun
Afraid of what you’d find if you stepped back inside.
I’m not sucking my thumb, staring at the sun
Not the only one who’s happy to go blind.

U2 Video of the Day – 21 February

From the 2003 DVD “Live from Slane Castle”

My favourite track from “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” – released in the year 2000

Hallelujah

And love is not the easy thing
The only baggage you can bring…
And love is not the easy thing….
The only baggage you can bring
Is all that you can’t leave behind

And if the darkness is to keep us apart
And if the daylight feels like it’s a long way off
And if your glass heart should crack
And for a second you turn back
Oh no, be strong

Walk on, walk on
What you got they can’t steal it
No they can’t even feel it
Walk on, walk on…
Stay safe tonight

You’re packing a suitcase for a place none of us has been
A place that has to be believed to be seen
You could have flown away
A singing bird in an open cage
Who will only fly, only fly for freedom

Walk on, walk on
What you’ve got they can’t deny it
Can’t sell it, can’t buy it
Walk on, walk on
Stay safe tonight

And I know it aches
And your heart it breaks
And you can only take so much
Walk on, walk on

Home… hard to know what it is if you’ve never had one
Home… I can’t say where it is but I know I’m going home
That’s where the hurt is

I know it aches
How your heart it breaks
And you can only take so much
Walk on, walk on

Leave it behind
You’ve got to leave it behind
All that you fashion
All that you make
All that you build
All that you break
All that you measure
All that you steal
All this you can leave behind
All that you reason
All that you sense
All that you speak
All you dress up
All that you scheme…

U2 Video of the Day – 20 February

My favourite track from “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb”

incredible setting, incredible song…

The more you see the less you know
The less you find out as you go
I knew much more then than I do now

Neon heart dayglo eyes
A city lit by fireflies
They’re advertising in the skies
For people like us

And I miss you when you’re not around
I’m getting ready to leave the ground….

Ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh

Oh you look so beautiful tonight
In the city of blinding lights

Don’t look before you laugh
Look ugly in a photograph
Flash bulbs purple irises
The camera can’t see

I’ve seen you walk unafraid
I’ve seen you in the clothes you made
Can you see the beauty inside of me?
What happened to the beauty I had inside of me

And I miss you when you’re not around
I’m getting ready to leave the ground

Ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh

Oh you look so beautiful tonight
In the city of blinding lights

Time… time
Won’t leave me as I am
But time won’t take the boy out of this man

Oh you look so beautiful tonight
Oh you look so beautiful tonight
Oh you look so beautiful tonight
In the city of blinding lights

The more you know the less you feel
Some pray for others steal
Blessings are not just for the ones who kneel… luckily
